About Malaysia Reverted Muslim

Taking Wudu

MR. FUN

“Fun, what do you think about this software? It can put your photo as pendrive Icon. Looks cool right?”
“Hey, I told you many times “Fun” is my surname, why don’t you just call my proper name?”

“Alright, Fun.”

Mr. Fun was my best friend at Institute, we was the only Chinese among every IT students. We used to share the same hostel room, did all the stupid stuffs and nonsense for nothing. It was my relaxing moment to have him as my best friend while studying, eating Maggie, and hanging around. Just both of us most of the time.

“Fun, I’m just embraced Islam recently. By the way, I’m inviting you to my marriage ceremony.”
“Are you serious?” Mr. Fun looking at me with his eyeballs nearly popped out.

"Yeah, seriously."

Mr. Fun never thinks that’s a funny joke. Our conversation ended here at 2008. He deactivated Myspace.com account, disconnected me from Friendster.com. While I accidentally lost his handphone number.

He is my first best friend who knew about my embracement with Islam, also the last.

We Are "Malaysia Reverted Muslim"

Meeting before the Iftar getting started

“Let’s welcome our brother Ikhwan Ng from Taiping.” Bro Firdaus Wong announced to everyone who held up a small meeting before Iftar program getting started. I just smiled. I have been invited as an amateur photographer and also blogger. Seriously I have no idea what to write about this Iftar program at my blog, until recently there is an article entitled “5 Things Every Mosque Should Do for Converts (That They Arent Doing)” really intrigue my attention to write about our informal group from facebook : Malaysia Reverted Muslim.

From very first time, “Malaysia Reverted Muslim” was formerly named as “Malaysia Chinese Muslim”. I was just search around FB pages and clicked Like button on this page. From there I get in touch with bro Firdaus Wong Wai Hung who is the page admin. He was suggested that perhaps the page members should be held up a small gathering. “It must be very interesting since we don’t meet each other before, how about we do a gathering at Ipoh?”

Most of the members agreed. So the gathering was held up last year January at MACMA Ipoh. It was my first time to meet with so many reverted muslim at the same time, although they are not more than 20 peoples. This gathering was just rolling like a snow ball, the longer it rolls the bigger it gets.

MRM originally isn’t a NGO or registered organization, It’s just a facebook group that connected reverted muslim. We exchange opinions and views about doubts in Islam, current issue, and family problems. We are looking for a comfortable social group that we might give Salam with each other, talking with our mother tongue language, finding our favorite foods yet halalan toyyiban~

KL members have been meet up each others for several times like taking lunch together, small gathering, attend lecture course together… However this year MRM is doing a larger gathering, which is 12 August 2012 Iftar at Al-Khadeem.

Knowing Each Other Without Prejudice

Al-Khadeem prayers

One of the biggest complaints I hear from converts is that they feel lonely. They don’t fit in at the Masjid because they aren’t Arab or Somali. They don’t fit in with their friends because none of their friends are Muslim. They don’t fit in with their family who, often times, might be giving them grief over their conversion. And the Masjids are bereft of other converts, because they long ago quit coming on a regular basis due to neglect. What is a convert to do? In such a situation, the only thing that can help converts is OTHER CONVERTS. They need a support system, Muslims of their culture who meet outside the Masjid… not in the non-Muslim environments they are used to, and not at the Masjid full of all those Back-Home-Istanians… A new space. A different space. A third space…

Quoted from :  5 Things Every Mosque Should Do for Converts (That They Arent Doing)

I was snapping photos in and out at Al-Khadeem, looking around for something interesting, or someone. Everyone who has attended is from different backgrounds and races, we gathered for the sake of Allah SWT. Community who share the same faith might create a powerful strength, we are convincing the others who unfamiliar with Islam that we are never judge people by outlook and skin color, but we all might sit on the same table regardless about that.

“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.”

(Surat Al-Ĥujurāt (The Rooms) 49:13)

If everyone of us have a black and white colour vision, will there anymore racism and prejudice? Islam is telling us how to accept the difference of race and skin colour, from there we might know the different talents and viewpoint from others, making our world more colourful and cherish. How can it become racism activities by certain irresponsible people?

Have You Heard Our Voice?

Sometime I notice there are some inspirational speech from friends
"You know I am a former Christian, before this whatever I have been told by pastor I would just accept it without think twice. So when I am struggling so hard to look for the truth in religion and become Muslim now, is it possible that I may accept Islamic knowledge that is not proven with any dalil?”

I was chatting with bro Ng Kuan Beng, I remember this speech until now. Everyone who comes to Islam have a interesting story to tell. Their voice is very small but once you heard it, you won’t forget it forever. We are so excited to tell everyone that we have found the priceless gift from God, the guidance towards Islam. However we are trying to express it in our own way, let it be a Blog, a Speech, a Talk or even a Book.

Adam Eh is one of the examples. He was attended our gathering at last year and for now, he is also a book author who share about his story. Adam Eh did chat with me and asking me whether I will be publishing book or not? Well… Seriously I’m not a good BM writer, although I can speak BM but writing is another matter. Every language has their own beauty and artistic way to express, the same meaning which writes in different language can’t express the exact feeling.

Perhaps one day I will be publishing my own book, but not now.

Chinese Bak Zhang

Chicken meat Bak Zhang

Sister Noorshin Ng bring us a few Bak Zhang (肉棕), it’s a delicious Chinese food that need superb cooking skill and talent to make a good one. The original chinese recipe is using Angry Pig material, of course sister Noorshin Ng brought us the chicken Bak Zhang anyway. It’s very tasty and yummy, perhaps I should learn how to cook one day.

What is the future of “Malaysia Reverted Muslim”?

Bro Firdaus Wong told me that MRM is on the way to be registered as NGO. Since I’m staying far away from KL area, I am always listen to their recent activity and news through facebook and skype. Personally I think whether MRM is getting registered as NGO or not is no big deal, I do pray to Allah SWT that our relationship within Muslim is getting better than ever.

The aim is not trying to convince how great we are, but everyone of us are just trying to contribute something as a servant of Allah SWT. No matter in breaking the barrier of challenges or Dakwah.

In Allah we believe
In Islam we live with

    2. Assalamu'alykum,
I am En. Nawawi. A Malay Muslim but I like to be known as a Muslim rather than as a Malay. I like your blog. Actually I have been thinking for quite some time on how to get in touch with muslims from Chinese and Indian origins in Malaysia particularly in the northern region.

I was onced invited by Ustaz MOHD NAIM ISLAM BIN ABDULLAH to give a talk new muslim converts after tarawikh prayer at PUSAT BIMBINGAN ISLAM SULTAN ABDUL HALIM MU’ADZAM SHAH (PUSBA).

I am a leading member of HALUAN NGO in Perlis. In Haluan we have Haluan Fitrah a division dealing with non-Malay muslims. I would be very happy if you can help us to build a good and meaningful relation with reverted muslims in the northern states. We are willing to welcome all non-Malay muslim as brothers and sisters in our NGO.

If you like to know more about Haluan please feel free to visit http://www.haluan.org.my/v5/.

I can be contacted through my email: akhnawawi@gmail.com

  2. I love that Sister Noorshin Ng brought a traditional Chinese dish to the gathering! Just because one embraced Islam, doesn't mean that one loses one's culture, language or family. Islam is actually big on inclusivity, that is why the only favour we should look upon one another is how well is that person serving Allah, not the skin colour, wealth or position in society.

I think it is important for Muslim reverts to share the richness of their culture (especially food!) with other Muslims and show to their non-Muslim family and friends that embracing Islam doesn't "take" one away from their family. My uncle is a revert and my aunt (my mother's sister) would bring food during the CNY family dinner. The rest of the family can have what they usually eat, but also what new dishes my aunt prepared. They also prepared halal version of the traditional food so that my uncle can still enjoy them and my aunt and cousin could also have a taste.

Perhaps if Mr Fun realises that your embracing Islam doesn't change the fundamental you except your faith and spirituality, he wouldn't be so quick to defriend you. That is a misconception that we should work to dispel, no?

  5. Assalamualaikum, I have a sensitive question to as you, actually the question being asked to me many times by my non muslim friend.......as well known that we muslim forbid to eat pork, so once one of the non muslim family member revert to Islam, what happen to the pork eating family? Shall they quit eating pork? What shall they do to the cutleries, shall they throw it away and buy the new ones, since they want their son/daughter to come home and having family meal once in a while......if the cutleries needed to be thrown, then isn't that wasted and wasted also forbid in ISLAM.........I never answer the question since I myself not so sure how to answer it........please help me to explain to my friend so that they will feel better toward ISLAM, thank.

    1. Walaikumsalam. you can ask me anything that is sensitive, and if you also can email me at lifemualaf@gmail.com

Yes, in Islam pork is forbidden and no excuse about it. As for foods it shouldn't be mixed with pork as well because afraid it may absorbed along. However, you don't have to throw away your cutlery. It's enough to wash it till clean and no sign of pork or lard. I know this answer caused a lot controversy but that's what have been explained by DR. MAZA, Mantan Muftri Perlis regarding this issue.

You can try watch this youtube video

"Apa hukum makan masakan bukan Islam?"
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5FYhoYxlqQ

The answer is very simple, there are no dalil mentioned that Muslim must be wash 7 times water with one time soil on cutlery because that is refer to what licked by dog. It is assumption (Sangkaan) that it should be the same goes to plate that served prok before.

As Islam never put unnecessary burden on muslim, most importantly we must look for the dalil and explained by the knowledgeable person regarding Fiqh.

    2. If you really are a former Christian, you would know that consumption of pork is forbidden in the Old Testament(which then applied in the quran). Though you should also notice that camel are forbidden too. Guess who eat the camel ?

  6. Subhanallah, may Allah SWT strengthen the Iman and Islam of you and your brethren in MRM. I'm impressed with the writings and blogs of my Malaysian reverted Muslim brothers and sisters who have to struggle to hold their faith while juggling with culture, tradition, the family that is not yet Muslim, etc. Insha Allah the harder the struggle, the greater the reward from Allah. Ameen....

    1. yes..me, one of malay that really interested to approach reverted brothers as their story really inspired myself to be a better muslim yet I don't really get to know how to and who to talk to about..I wish I can get chance to know more reverted muslim and somehow learn something I don't know about Islam from them..

    2. Sometime reverted muslim can be very sensitive, especially when it comes to cultural.

I think the best way of approach them is "don't criticize". You may giving soft advice and support to them, because reverted muslim can be fragile. Some of my friends even walk away from Islam unfortunately. The main reason due to they don't feel like going home when deal with muslim.

So in order to approach them, we must be not hurt their feeling. If we know that they are wrong in certain way, make sure we are telling the right thing before we advice. : )

  8. Assalamualaikum,
When I first reverted, I also dare not tell anyone. I did not tell my friends or family for 6 months. After my husband & I got married secretly and everything had settled (i.e. we got a house & moved in), only did I tell my family who got very upset with me. After that I sent out sms to 6 of my closest friends (all non-Muslims), telling them what I had done & invited them for dinner at Nelayan Restaurant one night. Alhamdulillah, all of them came & ensured me that whatever decision I made, they will still be my friend. After 17 yrs, I'm happy to say we still remain good friends as ever. They would always choose halal restaurants for our gatherings & they even prepared my hantaran (we had to buy many 'Pengantin' magazines as reference!) during my wedding ceremony, 4mths after the akad nikah. When I decided to don the hijab after I gave birth, some of them would always buy me beautiful scarves whenever they go overseas. Even though my family had never fully accepted me but I am truly thankful for the support of these friends of mine.

    1. Walaikumsalam. MashaAllah, your friends are truly best friends !

I wish to have friends like yours. Perhaps my friends are too sensitive with with what Islam about. Especially nowadays people just talk about 911 and Taliban, it makes me feel hard to explain what Islam really about.

So far only one best friend know about my marriage.

If you want to introduce Islam to them, I can give you few chinese booklets that is easy to understand. And most of the topic is about misunderstands about Islam. Giving al-Quran with translation can be good, but I worry they won't understand much especially at internet there are lots of twisted statement that quotes al-Quran verse.

That's no one to be blame, she must be understand that hidayah comes from Allah not human. Especially we are living in a multiracial country, religion and cultural issue might be complicated.

The message could be very simple, share a book about who is Allah, or just a youtube video from sheikh would be supporting to them.

Alhamdulillah that she is back to Islam :) May Allah guide you always

May I ask if you can organize a debate between Dr Zakir Naik & David Wood in the topic "Is The Quran The Word of God?".

Held it with thousands spectators at PICC & live telecast it over TV3 to the whole of Malaysia.

Let Malaysians witness who is a greater debater.
