Mourn Over Reverted Muslim Chai Jian Xiong (蔡健雄)

Chinese article written by Brother Esa Yap and translated

A Chinese Muslimin, had commit suicide by hanged himself inside Police Station's office that placed at Pekan Nanas, Pontian district, Johor. The deceased aged 29 years, embraced Islam last year. According to his colleagues, Chai Jian Xiong (蔡健雄) embraced Islam due to close relationship with a girl. Chai Jian Xiong seems to be worried over their relationship, also claimed had an argument with girlfriend last wednesday, hence go and back between Melaka state and Pekan Nanas few times.

Chinese Muslim, Pontian district, 29 years old. The deceased have three similarities with me. Pontian district is the place where I embraced Islam, yet I'm 30 years old already this year. If he is still alive, perhaps we may become friends.  al-Qur'an states :

Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?
(Quran: 29:2)
Every Reverted Muslim who just embraced Islam will be tested. Those Reverted Muslim I knew have experiences all sort of difficulties. Some of their difficulties may count as extreme. Even myself also being tested. Everyone experiences different form and level of trials and difficulties. While the difficulties I have is hardly bearable, moreover the period of time last for years. If I don't have faith within, for sure I can't go through those trials.

Perhaps, someone might say, don't I scare away young people who interested to embrace Islam by saying so?  My answer is, if do have faith within, they will still embrace Islam one day. If they get scared away just because of my few words, then it means their confidence is still not acquire the sufficient level.

Rainbow arise after trials and difficulties. al-Qur'an states :

They said, "Are you indeed Joseph?" He said "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly favored us. Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good."

(Quran: 12:90)

Chai Jian Xiong's life can't be taking back. What Muslim may do is pray for him, May Allah have mercy and
forgives his sin.

My Personal Opinion

After translated this article written by brother Muhammad Esa Yap, I would like to share another important article regarding the sin of commit suicide.   I believe act of commit suicide is not permissible whether from perspective of Islam or any religions view. However, I don't have right to judge what is the deceased's intention as he wasn't left any last words. Still, the commit suicide case is happening everyday. Do we spread the message to them that hold firmly to the rope of Allah s.w.t. (3:103)? Or we are just judging over the deceased that they shouldn't do so and so when they have gone without realized the true message from Islam?

Time to ponder upon.

Why is committing suicide a sin in Islam?

Committing suicide is one of the greatest sins that Islam banned. Committing suicide is a greater murder and sin than killing another person. Therefore ulama (scientists, knowers) even disputed whether the janazah prayer of a person who committed suicide could be performed or not. There is no dispute over the murderer who killed another. The janazah prayer of a murderer is performed.

A person who has the tiniest portion of belief in his heart does not consent to such a big sin and bad ending, and does not attempt to commit suicide. Our prophet (PBUH) informed that committing suicide was a great sin in many hadiths. One of the hadiths is as follows:

"He who commits suicide by throttling shall keep on throttling himself in the Hell Fire (forever) and he who commits suicide by stabbing himself shall keep on stabbing himself in the Hell-Fire." (Bukhari, Janaiz 84)

This hadith tells us that a Muslim must not attempt to commit such a sin under the influence of a worldly event by being unable to bear it. The greatest and the worst worldly event cannot be regarded as great in comparison to a hereafter problem. After all, this world is temporary, it will pass by.

The events that force a person to commit suicide because they are thought to be unbearable may turn out to be not so worthy of sadness after a while; then it will be forgotten in time and new questions will occur.

The wisdom why patience is necessary as soon as the misfortune occurs is justified here.

Believers are not depressed by temporary things; they do not regard them as never ending sorrow and grief. They show patience by saying this will also pass and try to get the reward of the patience. Thus, they transform the misfortune into compassion.

The janazah prayer of a person who committed suicide is performed. There occurs nothing as to go out of belief but something like being unable to bear the pressure of the events due to the weakness of belief. Therefore the janazah prayer of a person who committed suicide is performed. That person can deserve to go the paradise only after he serves the punishment of committing suicide in the hereafter.

One of the reasons why committing suicide is a great sin is that man is not authorized to kill himself. Human body is a construction made by Allah. He who has built that structure will pull it down. Man cannot own his body and his soul....

  2. Salam'alaikum wa rahmatullah,

Perhaps he committed suicide due to certain difficult circumstances. He is a reverted Muslim. I had also have the thought to commit suicide when I was in difficulties and have no one to talk to. And I was born and raised in a Muslim family. Even prophets are also tested, e.g prophet Isa a.s and also our noble prophet Muhammad s.a.w. Allah bless the soul, we pray may Allah forgives him with His direct intercession, amin.

  6. let's not talk about suicide as a SIN (because when a person is down in the dumps, hukum dosa-haram is not what they are interested anymore - they are feeling so trapped & they are feeling as tho GOD is not being kind to them!)but it is a sad thing that HE chose to end his life because he was NOT able to cope with what he was going through. he knows best about his challenges. UNFORTUNATELY, he probably didnt have the courage to wave his hands to get help from others & kept them all to himself. that is why ... we need to be very sensitive with people around us. information about help support has to spread openly just like the RAWATAN TRADISIONAL or UBAT KUAT TENAGA flyers pasted EVERYWHERE - tiang lampu, phone booth, bus stops ... EVERYWHERE la. if only we can have flyers about help support pasted EVERYWHERE, at least as many as these stupid flyers, or advertisements on TV about help support .. i believe we can prevent more suicide cases ... at least amongst MALAYSIANs! (help support info - organizations that provides support to people with problems ... Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat, LPPKN, Befrienders, SIS, PERKIM, Women Center for Change, Family Health Development Association .. and maaaaaaaaaaaaany more. basic info ... name or organization, phone number, email or fb link ... i think these info is enough to give room to individuals who feel trapped in whatever situation they are in) - just my 2-sen thoughts dari pandangan mata I yang rabun ... -
